Friday (continued)
Bela Fleck & The Colorado Symphony - This is one that we had all been waiting for. The symphony opened first with a number that escapes me at the moment - something of a pastoral piece. Next was Rossini's William Tell Overture which most people recognize as the Lone Ranger's theme, which they then followed with the first movement of Mozart's Jupiter Symphony. Again, the sound system was shown to be excellent and even the overall hubub of noise didn't drown out the beautiful music of the symphony. If you can't tell, I love classical music. I didn't as a kid, but I came to appreciate it as an adult. Next, Bela came out and performed with the symphony, the three movements of his own composition known as "The Imposter Concerto." I must admit, though the piece was performed admirably, the style of the piece was not something I really enjoyed. Perhaps a bit to avante guard for me? In any case, I stuck it out because I knew more classical music was to follow and I wasn't disappointed. The symphony finished with the final movement of the Jupiter Symphony. Then the best part happened. Sam Bush came out and joined Bela as they performed County Clare (here's a YouTube recording of the perfomance.). That was perhaps the greatest musical moment of the weekend for me. It was just phenomenal! By the way, I discovered here that Bela's name is pronounced "bay-la" - I had been mispronouncing it for years.
Dave Rawlings Machine - I didn't catch much of this because I needed to go back to camp and get warmer clothes on. I may have caught a bit of it as I was walking back in, but not enough to actually report on.
Steve Winwood - It was kind of bizarre to have a rock guy here, but he was very good and the musician's he had were the best. I was really tired, so I didn't stay for all of it. Dan did and said the final numbers were really great.
