In a weird coincidence I find out that Bill used to work with Paula (Thornton) Cartwright, my first girlfriend. This ended up the only time we road in the dark. We got to Lewiston and it was already dark, but still comfortably warm. Then we got to the top of the Lewiston grade and up on the Palouse. The temperture dropped probably 10-15 degrees – brrrr! So there we are blasting through the wheat fields thinking that any minute a deer is going to jump out and get us killed. Not going to do that again! But we finally pull into Pullman where we slept inside for a change.
Old Girlfriend
We slept in and decided to go surprise Paula at work. She didn't get to work until around 9:30am so we went over to the Crimson and Gray store. Back in the 1990's sometime WSU allowed the bookie to be purchased and run by a large bookseller. The whole transaction and the way the store was run didn't sit too well with the people that ran it, so they started their own store and it seems to be very successful. Tim bought a new pair of cougar glasses and then we were off to visit Paula. This was a ton of fun for me because I hadn't seen Paula since before she was married. It was pretty funny because she didn't recognise me at all, what with the grey hair, beard, and weight I can't say that I blame her.
It was great to see her again and hear that her husband Dave's back problems, while continuing were much better. We talked about kids, etc. for quite awhile, then we had to let her get to work and we headed off to get lunch at Quizno's ("mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, tasty").
