Day 2 - Wednesday, July 27, 2011 click to enlarge

Day two dawned bright and a little overcast, but no rain! Most of us were up shortly after 5am for some strange reason. It did give us plenty of time for packing and breakfast, so we got away by about 7:30am. We had to make up time since we were not starting in Nakusp. Originally we would be going from there to Revelstoke, then turning west on Canada 1 to head to Kamloops. But that would really make a long day, so we modified things a bit. We still went east out of Nelson and then north on 31 to Kaslo, then west to New Denver. This is a really great road - lots of twisties! The weather cooperated and just stayed a bit overcast. It was cool without being cold so it was really nice riding weather. From New Denver, we continued north on 6 to Nakusp where we stopped for a coffee break.

We took off again heading south on 6 down to the Fauquier/Needles ferry. This was a first for a few of us on motorcycles. The ferry was interesting because instead of a free running ship like I've been on in western Washington, it ran along cables. It was so smooth that we were moving before I knew it. They're pretty efficient too. we were the last ones on board and as soon as we rolled on, they lifted the gate and started moving.

Leaving the ferry we continued west on 6 which was also very nice and twisty. One thing I appreciate about the Canadian highways is that though a lot of them are two lane roads they have plenty of passing lanes. Along with that is generally a better class of driver than we get down in the states. Most will make an effort to find a way to allow you to pass them. Another thing is how clean their roads are. I don't mean the road surface, but rather the sides of the highways. You just don't see the trash up there that is so prevalent in the U.S. I love my country and would not choose to live anywhere else, but we would do well to learn from other country's good habits.
