Epilog
This was a great first motorcycle camping trip. None of the riding was too hard or long and it helped me figure out what worked and what didn't. The bike ran great and over the whole trip averaged 51 mpg which was pretty good considering how loaded up it was. I traveled 964.6 miles. While the bike seat isn't as uncomfortable as I've read on Stromtrooper, it could definitely be more comfortable. I’m going to get a beadrider to see if that helps for long trips. It was nice meeting Bill and it turns out he's really a good rider.
What worked Leaving the top box mostly empty to put stuff in. That proved really nice as we stopped places. The tent, sleeping pad both worked great. Easy to set up and take down. The polarized sunglasses I bought – that allowed me to see decently even into the sun.
Improvements:
While bungicords are convenient, they allow the load to shift too much. Nylon straps that don't slip would be better. I need to take some container for bike stuff so I leave my side bags for clothing, etc.
I need to allow some empty room to put stuff when I need to. When it got too hot and I needed to stuff my overpants somewhere, it was a tight fit. Bringing an empty back that could be strapped to the bike load would be a good idea - preferably a drybag in case of rain.
Need some rags to wipe down the tent footprint from evening moisture – it collects a lot of dirt.
Bringing window cleaner and rag for windshield and helmet visor next time would be a good idea. Grant had some and we all took advantage of it.
Very important: need to have prescription polarized glasses to wear, I just need to remember not to lose them!
Communication between bikes would really be nice. I’m going to look into some type of bluetooth set if I can find one that isn't too expensive.
12 volt splitter so I can have the GPS plugged in and phone charger too.
Tank bag would help alleviate some storage issues and would provide a place to put the phone when charging.
