Getting up at my now predictable 6am, we had our fruit breakfast and broke camp, getting on the road in a couple hours. We continued on SR89 riding past Quincy on our way toward Lake Tahoe. We passed through Truckee and then took SR267 to Kings Beach and saw the lake. A very windy lake that day. We continued on, riding through town noting that there was a lot of money in that little town. What I didn't know was that shortly after getting out of town riding along the lake we entered Nevada. I kept looking for a sign, but I never saw one. click to enlarge I think I was expecting to get to desert and that would be Nevada. click to enlarge Anyways, we rode up a really nice and twisty SR431 on our way out of the Sierra Nevada mountains, crossed over US395 and followed SR341 through the hills to Virginia City. We stopped on the outskirts of town chatting with a BMW rider who was going to take the road we just came in on, back and forth twice that day. He gave us a nice tip that heading out of town we should take the truck route as it is a nice riding road. So we headed through town. click to enlarge Interesting part about the town is that they don't seem to have done anything about the road - it's very narrow and today packed with tourists. Maybe on a slower day it might have been nice to stop and explore a bit, but again, we had miles to go before we rest for the day. Our friend's tip was a good one though. Nobody on it and lots of curves.

That would be it for the day though as we rolled on to US50, known as "the lonliest highway in America" which isn't a bad description. It was just one big connection of really, really long straight stretches of road. We just pinned the throttle around 85mph and flew through it. It was pretty much what I expected: barren, dry, & mostly lifeless. Little oasis towns here and there. We stopped in Fallon to fill up our gas tanks and get a little lunch, then back on the road we went. I could talk about each town we went through, but to be honest, I don't remember much of them. Some were barely a town, just a collection of houses that made me wonder why they were there. Some though were nice little towns like Eureka which surprised me being at around 6500 feet in elevation. View Map 3 I had this notion that Nevada was all low elevation, but most of the towns we went through were above five or six thousand feet. We stopped for gas and snacks then headed to Ely where we needed to find a camp. We desperately wanted someplace that had showers, but couldn't seem to come up with one.
