My Thoughts On The Bike

After our Colorado BDR trip I realized I need to get a road-worthy bike for longer trips. It needed to be around 100hp, under 500 pounds, handle well, and have good wind coverage. My friend Tim Pontius picked up a BMW F900XR and I realized what a great bike it was. I found a 2021 with all the extras and only 385 miles, which I picked up in January of 2023.

When I say it came with all the extras, I mean it: handguards, heated grips, adaptive headlight, Dynamic ESA (suspension), ABS pro, keyless ride, headlight pro, anti-theft alarm, GPS prep, tire pressure monitor, cruise control, saddle bag mounts, Dynamic Traction Control, Gear Shift Assist (quick shifter), and a center stand. Clearly, for some of this there's a learning curve, but so far I love all the bells and whistles. The only downside so far is that I can't purchase a service manual for it - BMW stopped selling them for all of their motorcycles.

I've put over 2700 miles on it this year covering in-town going to work miles, some short day trips, as well as a three day ride down into Oregon and back. I've decided I really like this bike. It's probably the best bike I've yet owned for road travel. Good horsepower, excellent handling and brakes, decent wind protection, and having true cruise control is nearly a game changer. Just all around better than what I've had before. I always ride with my beadrider on my seat, so long distance travel isn't a problem. And at this point, I can't think of anything it needs that it doesn't already have. I've certainly modified it less than any bike I've own thus far. At my age, it may be the last bike I buy. But don't bet on it!
